Care Guide
Caring for natural materials is simple, but a little intention goes a long way. Teak, rattan and linen are all designed to soften, evolve and develop character over time. With gentle care, and regular maintenance, each piece will continue to age beautifully and bring warmth, texture and quiet to your home.
Teak
The Nature of Teak

Teak is prized for its rich warmth, natural oils, and enduring strength.
Over time, the timber will soften in tone and develop a lived-in patina unique to your space. Variations in grain, colour, and texture are inherent characteristics of natural timber and part of its quiet beauty.

Daily Care
-
Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth
-
Wipe spills promptly using a damp cloth and dry immediately
-
Avoid abrasive cleaners, bleach, or harsh chemical products
-
Use coasters, placemats, and protective pads where possible
Placement & Protection
To preserve the integrity of the timber:
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which may cause fading or uneven colouring
-
Keep away from excessive moisture or heat sources
-
Maintain stable indoor humidity where possible to minimise natural movement in the timber

Nourishing the Timber
Teak’s natural oils help protect the surface, though occasional maintenance will enhance its longevity and depth.

Indoor Pieces
-
Apply a quality teak oil or natural wax every 6–12 months if the timber appears dry
-
Always apply with a soft cloth following the direction of the grain
-
Remove excess product after application
Outdoor Pieces
-
Teak may naturally weather to a soft silver-grey patina if left untreated outdoors
-
To maintain the original golden tone, use a teak protector periodically
Natural Movement
As a living material, teak may gently expand, contract, or develop fine surface lines over time. These subtle changes are not considered imperfections, but part of the character and evolution of solid timber.

A Note on Patina
At Bija, we believe natural materials should age gracefully. The softening of colour, subtle markings, and signs of everyday living are what give each piece its depth and individuality over time.
Rattan
The Nature of Rattan

Rattan is a natural material celebrated for its warmth, texture, and organic character. Handwoven variations, tonal differences, and subtle imperfections are inherent to the material and contribute to the individuality of each piece.

Over time, rattan develops a softness and patina unique to its environment and use.

Daily Care
-
Dust regularly using a soft cloth or dry brush
-
For woven areas, use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from crevices
-
Wipe gently with a lightly damp cloth when needed
-
Dry thoroughly after cleaning
Avoid soaking the material or using harsh chemical cleaners, as excess moisture may weaken the fibres over time.
Placement & Protection
To preserve the integrity of the natural fibres:
-
Keep indoors or in covered outdoor areas only
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which may cause fading or drying
-
Protect from excessive humidity and rain
-
Avoid placing heavy weight on delicate woven sections

Maintaining the Finish
-
Occasionally clean with a mild soap diluted in water if required
-
Ensure the piece is completely dry afterwards
-
A soft natural wax may be applied sparingly to maintain lustre on finished frames

Natural Ageing
As a natural material, rattan may gently soften in colour and texture over time. Minor movement within the weave and subtle tonal variation are considered part of its evolving character.
A Note on Craftsmanship
Each rattan piece carries the mark of the artisan’s hand. Variations in weave, colour, and natural fibre texture are not flaws, but a reflection of slow craftsmanship and the beauty of organic materials.

Linen
The Nature of Linen

Crafted from natural flax fibres, linen is valued for its relaxed texture, breathability, and understated elegance. Its softness deepens with time and use, creating a lived-in character that is both effortless and refined.

Subtle variations in weave and tone are inherent to natural linen and part of its unique beauty.

Everyday Care
-
Gently shake or vacuum cushions and upholstery regularly to remove dust
-
Spot clean spills immediately using a clean, damp cloth
-
Blot rather than rub to avoid damaging the fibres
-
Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach-based products
Washing Recommendations
Where removable covers are provided:
-
Cold gentle machine wash or hand wash only
-
Use mild, natural detergent
-
Wash separately or with similar colours
-
Do not tumble dry
Air dry naturally in shade and reshape while damp where required.

For larger upholstered pieces or delicate finishes, professional cleaning is recommended.

Placement & Protection
To preserve the integrity of the fabric:
-
Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which may cause natural fading over time
-
Keep away from excessive moisture or damp environments
-
Rotate cushions periodically to encourage even wear

Embracing the Natural Texture
Linen is designed to soften and relax with use. Gentle creasing and subtle texture changes are considered part of the fabric’s organic character and lived-in appeal.
